The library of the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Global Center for Arabic Calligraphy „Dar Al Qalam” is the largest and first specialized library in the world dedicated to Arabic calligraphy and related arts. It houses publications in multiple languages to introduce Arabic calligraphy and its various forms.
The library aims to build a leading international knowledge reference to serve scientific research, and to establish the world’s largest repository for documenting and preserving the memory of this civilizational heritage. It provides a supportive environment and knowledge services targeting academic researchers, as well as calligraphers, artists, and those interested in the aesthetics of this art.
The library’s knowledge collections are integrated into a comprehensive specialized system. It begins with documenting the history of Arabic calligraphy, its origins, and stages of development, and extends to biographies of calligraphers, writing tools, and the making of inks, pens, and paper. It also includes educational workbooks, albums, and calligraphic panels, in addition to supporting arts such as illumination, ornamentation, and engraving. This ensures comprehensive knowledge coverage for both researchers and practitioners.
The library holds nearly 2,000 specialized titles in 11 different global languages, along with around 450 rare book copies in the field. It also contains the center’s scientific publications, specialized encyclopedias, catalogs of international and local exhibitions and competitions, peer-reviewed periodicals, digitized manuscripts, and academic theses.
The library provides an integrated research environment with a capacity for 60 visitors and researchers at one time. It is equipped with advanced technologies including self-service borrowing, high-resolution scanners available to visitors, and a book sterilization device after use, among other services aimed at enhancing the visitor experience.
With these resources, the library serves as a leading global beacon that enriches specialized content on Arabic calligraphy and makes this civilizational legacy accessible to future generations.
