Ambassador Nabil Fahmy officially assumed his duties on Wednesday as the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States.
An official handover ceremony was held at the pan-Arab organization’s General Secretariat headquarters in Cairo, where Fahmy took over the leadership from the outgoing Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who has concluded his tenure. The ceremony was attended by the Assistant Secretaries-General, senior officials, and staff members of the General Secretariat.
Following the handover proceedings, the newly appointed Secretary-General received comprehensive briefings from senior secretariat officials regarding the latest developments across various regional political files.
Fahmy subsequently chaired an expanded meeting with the Assistant Secretaries-General to outline key structural priorities for the upcoming phase, focusing on organizational methodologies and institutional workflows across the League’s diverse sectors.
Marking his first official diplomatic act in office, the Secretary-General dispatched formal correspondence to Arab kings, presidents, and emirs, expressing his profound appreciation and gratitude for the trust placed in him to lead the regional body.
Fahmy also addressed official letters to Arab Foreign Ministers, offering an initial assessment of the current regional landscape. His correspondence outlined strategic proposals aimed at strengthening the Arab world’s collective capacity to confront pressing geopolitical challenges, advancing institutional reforms within the Arab League, and accelerating regional economic and social development initiatives.
