China and Egypt stand among the primary cradles of human civilization. The profound Chinese characters and the pictorial Egyptian hieroglyphs are both products of ancient wisdom forged through contemplating nature, recording life, and embodying faith—together forming the core cultural identity of both civilizations.
In this context, and coinciding with the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Egyptian-Chinese diplomatic relations, Cairo Opera House—under the chairmanship of Dr. Reda El-Wakil—hosted an exhibition titled “A Single Character Makes You Love China and Its Culture.” The event was sponsored by the Changsha International Association for Communication and Exchange and executed by the Hunan Song Dan Chinese Character Art Museum, in the presence of a distinguished group of diplomats, cultural figures, and media representatives from both nations, along with officials from the Chinese Embassy in Cairo and representatives of the Henan Museum of Arts and Chinese Characters.
The opening was attended by Minister Counselor of the Chinese Embassy Lu Xun-sheng; Song Zuohua, Director of the Henan Museum of Art; Fu, President of the Cairo Friends of China Association; Ambassador Magdy Amer, former Egyptian Ambassador to China; Major General Mahmoud Hassanain, former Egyptian Deputy Military Attaché to Beijing; alongside senior journalists, media professionals, and figures specializing in Sino-Egyptian relations.
The exhibition aims to offer an integrated cultural journey highlighting the aesthetic grandeur of Chinese characters as one of the most prominent pillars of the Asian nation’s heritage. It spans four main sections: Chinese calligraphic arts, bilingual Chinese-Arabic calligraphic panels, cultural and creative products, and interactive multimedia installations—providing visitors with a contemporary vision of Chinese culture and allowing them to explore its philosophy and history through innovative visual and applied mediums.
In his opening speech, Minister Counselor Lu Xun-sheng emphasized that the exhibition carries a dual significance, as it coincides with both the 70th anniversary of bilateral relations and the China-Africa Year of Cultural and People-to-People Exchanges.
„On the banks of the eternal Nile, we make Chinese characters a bridge for dialogue with Egyptian civilization,” Lu stated. „Thousands of years ago, Egyptian hieroglyphs and Chinese oracle bone script illuminated the torch of human civilization in a close timeframe. Today, that radiance is renewed through living dialogue.” He added that Chinese characters are not merely writing tools, but entire realms of Eastern philosophy, wisdom, and reflections on nature and life.
Lu further noted that every Chinese character conveys an image, a story, and a concept, embodying humanity’s contemplation of existence.
„Civilizations thrive on dialogue and shine through mutual exchanges and cooperation. We hope this exhibition will serve as a window opening for more Egyptian friends to discover and appreciate China,” Lu expressed, looking forward to continued joint efforts to strengthen Chinese language education in Egypt and build more platforms for cultural exchange, driving Sino-Egyptian relations toward broader, deeper, and more sustainable development.
Deep Historical Resonances
Delivering a speech on behalf of the Egyptian-Chinese Friendship Association, Ambassador Magdy Amer noted that the exhibition stands out as one of the most brilliant celebratory activities marking the 70-year milestone of diplomatic ties.
Amer recalled key moments from Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Luxor and its ancient temples, pointing out President Xi’s insightful observation regarding the striking similarities between ancient Egyptian symbols and Chinese characters, alongside his expressed desire to see comparative scientific studies explore this shared intellectual heritage.
Welcoming the Chinese delegation who traveled to Cairo for the event, Amer stressed that despite the geographical distance, Egypt and China remain bound by profound cultural and human ties. He added that the event allows the Egyptian public to appreciate the refined nuance of Chinese culture firsthand.
„Undoubtedly, this event adds splendid momentum to the friendship between our two peoples. It touches the soul, creates warm emotions, and creates unforgettable memories,” Amer remarked.
Artistic Masterpieces and Academic Partnerships
During the exhibition tour, visitors can explore the main section showcasing original works by artist Song Zihua and several artists from Hunan Province. The displays feature city-inspired creations, most notably “Egypt”—which integrates the silhouette of the Giza Pyramids within the Chinese characters that spell out the country’s name—and “Changsha,” which blends Yuelu Mountain, the Xiang River, and Orange Isle, reflecting a symbolic parallel between the Nile as Cairo’s lifeline and the Xiang River as the soul of Changsha.
The displays also include panels depicting traditional Eastern wisdom, contemporary applications of Chinese characters, and a collection of oracle-bone-inspired drawings designed for children to highlight similarities between the world’s oldest writing systems.
A centerpiece of the exhibition is a 12-meter-long artistic scroll featuring 31 classical Chinese proverbs and maxims presented in both Chinese and Arabic. The scroll was completed through a joint effort by 30 artists from Hunan and Egyptian Sinologist Liu Zhengxi, visually encapsulating the concept of harmonious coexistence among diverse civilizations.
Accompanying the launch were several cultural initiatives, including the establishment of the „Chinese Character Art Research and Experience Base in Egypt” in cooperation with the Confucius Institute at Ain Shams University, the donation of 100 specialized books on Chinese character culture to the Egyptian-Chinese Library Center, and the signing of long-term cooperation agreements with six Egyptian universities to support the teaching of Chinese character arts across academic faculties.
