Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has welcomed the announcement of a US-Iran agreement on a memorandum of understanding that sets out a sustainable ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The agreement is scheduled to be signed officially on Friday, 19 June, between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran, according to a statement issued by the Arab League Media Office on 15 June 2026.
Aboul Gheit said the development represents an important step toward ending Iranian and Israeli attacks on Arab territories and creating conditions to begin ending the war. He added that the agreement could pave the way for sustainable stability in the region.
He commended diplomatic efforts by Arab, regional, and international parties that contributed to reaching the understanding.
Aboul Gheit called on all concerned parties to approach the upcoming negotiations with a positive and serious attitude to secure a peaceful settlement. He stressed that any final agreement must uphold the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab states and address legitimate Arab demands related to regional security.
