The “Romanian Crown, 160 Years” medal, produced by the Romanian State Mint, was unveiled on Tuesday, 16 June 2026, at Elisabeta Palace, in the presence of Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown. For the first time in Romanian medallic art, the commemorative piece brings together the effigies of Romania’s four kings and that of the Custodian of the Romanian Crown.

The event was hosted by Her Majesty Margareta, alongside His Royal Highness Prince Radu and Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia. Atlas News România attended the ceremony marking 160 years since the accession to the throne of Prince Carol I, a founding moment in the history of the modern Romanian state and in the role of the Crown in Romania’s institutional development.

The ceremony brought together members of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives of state institutions, the Romanian Academy, the Romanian Orthodox Church, and civil society. Addresses were delivered by His Royal Highness Prince Radu and by Octavian Schen, Director General of the Romanian State Mint.

A First in Romanian Medallic Art

For the first time, a single composition brings together the effigies of King Carol I, King Ferdinand I, King Carol II, King Michael I, and Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown. The artistic choice goes beyond the strictly commemorative dimension: it offers an image of the continuity of the Romanian Crown, from the founding of the modern state to the present day.

The medal marks 160 years since the accession to the throne of Prince Carol I, an event that opened one of the most significant chapters in Romania’s modernisation. The figure of Carol I remains closely linked to the consolidation of the modern Romanian state, to institutional development, and to Romania’s affirmation as a European actor. Viewed as a whole, the medal’s composition traces the historical thread of the Romanian Crown from Carol I and the founding of modern Romania, through Ferdinand I and the Great Union, the reigns of Carol II and Michael I, and to the symbolic continuity embodied today by Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Romanian Crown.

The Romanian Crown, a Symbol of Historical Continuity

The unveiling of the medal at Elisabeta Palace carried particular symbolic weight. It was not merely a numismatic ceremony, but an event dedicated to the institutional memory of modern Romania.

Throughout the country’s history, the Romanian Crown has been associated with decisive moments in the building of the nation: the consolidation of the state, the modernisation of institutions, the affirmation of independence, the Great Union, and the preservation of continuity beyond the political ruptures of the twentieth century. By bringing together the four kings and the Custodian of the Crown in a single composition, the medal conveys the idea of a history that cannot be read in fragments, placing the dawn of Romanian modernity in direct relation to the present.

The presence of the Diplomatic Corps, representatives of state institutions, the Romanian Academy, the Romanian Orthodox Church, and civil society confirmed the solemn character of the event.

Elisabeta Palace, the Setting of a Ceremony of Symbolic Value

At a time when public debate is often dominated by matters of the moment, the unveiling of the medal brought back to the fore a deeper dimension of Romanian history: the continuity of the state. From Carol I to Her Majesty Margareta, the composition unites figures belonging to different eras, yet placed within the same symbolic frame of the Romanian Crown.

This approach gives the medal a value that goes beyond the object itself. It becomes a piece of public memory, a concentrated representation of a history that links the founding of the modern state to the institutional and symbolic present of the Crown.

For Atlas News România, participation in this event follows the publication’s editorial line dedicated to diplomacy, institutional memory, and the historical landmarks that have shaped modern Romania. The unveiling of the “Romanian Crown, 160 Years” medal was, in this sense, a moment of reaffirmation of an essential reality: modern Romania cannot be understood without the role of the Crown in its formation and consolidation.
