From Danube to Nile: Romania showcase literary heritage at Cairo Int’l Book Fair

Showcasing its rich literary heritage and cultural ties with Egypt as the Guest of Honor of the 57th Cairo International Book Fair 2026, marking 120 years of diplomatic relations.
The Romanian Embassy in Cairo has launched a special Press Kit, highlighting the country’s commitment to cultural diplomacy and people-to-people connections.

Ambassador of Romania to Egypt Olivia Toderean told Ahram Online that the CIBF is the most important event in the Arab world and Africa, highlighting Romania’s promotion of its literature globally.

„Romania is promoting its literature across borders and strengthening its presence on the international cultural scene,” Toderean said.

She noted That Through books, authors, ideas, and shared histories, Romania and Egypt reaffirm their long-standing friendship and their commitment to cultural diplomacy.”

Romania’s program includes 30 events and 60 guests, focusing on contemporary literature, translations, and cultural dialogue.

She highlighted that at the heart of the narrative lies “Books for Friends: From the Danube to the Nile” — a cultural journey that celebrates literature, translation, dialogue, and people-to-people connections between our two countries.
She noted That the official opening of the Romanian pavilion is on January 22, featuring authors like Tatiana Gîbuleac, Ioana Pârvulescu, Denisa Comănescu, Matei Vi Vniec, Varoujan Vosganian, Bogdan-Alexandru Stanescu, Catalin Pavel, and Radu Vancu.

Toderean added “The program includes literary debates, book launches, and performances of traditional Romanian music. Book launches of Arabic translations, professional meetings between editors, academic events, a program dedicated to children, the photo exhibition „The Unknown Beauty of Romania,” and performances of traditional Romanian music and dance.”

Romania is also participating in the „Cairo: Intersecting Voices 2” forum, a platform for artistic dialogue and international collaboration.
