Nabil Fahmy Backs Arab Security and Stability After Nomination for League of Arab States Leadership

Former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for Egypt’s decision to nominate him for the position of Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, effective July 1, 2026.

In a statement, Fahmy also expressed his deep gratitude to the member states of our esteemed regional organization for their unanimous approval of a recommendation to the 35th Ordinary Session of the Arab Summit, scheduled to be held in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to support his nomination as Secretary-General of the League of Arab States for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2026.

He added that he bears this great responsibility with utmost seriousness and awareness, given the unprecedented challenges facing our nation, the flagrant violations of international law by aggressors who have treacherously attacked our countries and our security, and the prolonged occupation of our lands by others who obstruct our brothers from exercising their legitimate rights, in addition to the schemes targeting our region. Hegemony and undermining the security and stability of the Arab world.

Nabil Fahmy considered this nomination a precious trust, affirming his commitment to upholding and preserving it through the League of Arab States and consulting with its members to address challenges and secure a more secure, stable, and prosperous Arab future. He also pledged to develop our visions, capabilities, and institutions, strengthen development paths, and cultivate shared and mutual interests among our nations.

Ambassador Nabil Fahmy was born on January 5, 1951. He served as Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs from July 14, 2013, in the cabinet of Dr. Hazem El-Beblawi and retained his position in the government of Engineer Ibrahim Mahlab, formed on February 26, 2014. He was the first Dean of the School of Public Affairs at the American University in Cairo (August 2009 – July 2013) and Egypt’s Ambassador to the United States (1999-2008). He is the son of Ismail Fahmy, the Egyptian Foreign Minister who resigned during the Camp David negotiations in 1979.
