The Sultanate of Oman continues to reaffirm its long-standing commitment to protecting and strengthening the rights and status of women through comprehensive legislation and national policies that promote equality and participation across society.

Omani law guarantees women extensive rights, including equality in education, employment, and property ownership, as well as the right to vote and stand for election. The country’s legal framework also regulates family rights through the Personal Status Law, which includes provisions related to dowry, alimony, custody, and independent financial responsibility. These protections are further supported by labor legislation designed to safeguard women’s professional rights, in addition to granting them the right to receive residential land allocations.

Growing Role of Women in Omani Journalism and Media

In the field of journalism and media, Omani women have established a strong and increasingly visible presence in both government and private institutions. They serve as editors, presenters, producers, and directors, while also occupying various leadership and administrative positions within media organizations.

Their growing influence reflects a broader national commitment to expanding women’s participation in the public sphere and strengthening their contribution to Oman’s social and economic development.

This progress coincides with the global celebration of International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, which this year is held under the theme: “Rights. Justice. Work. For all women and girls.”

Within this context, the Omani Journalists Association (OJA), represented by the Female Journalists Affairs Committee, joined women around the world in marking this international occasion.

The Association extended its sincere congratulations to Her Highness the Honorable Lady Ahad bint Abdullah Al Busaidiyah, spouse of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, as well as to all Omani women. The message highlighted the achievements of women in the Sultanate and wished them continued success and advancement under the leadership and support of the Renewed Renaissance led by His Majesty the Sultan.

Supporting Women’s Empowerment in Media

By participating in the global observance of International Women’s Day, the Omani Journalists Association emphasized the important milestones achieved by Omani women across multiple sectors. The Association underlined women’s active partnership in development and decision-making processes and their growing presence in both the public and private sectors.

These developments demonstrate the value of women’s intellectual contributions and their role in supporting the nation’s continued progress.

As part of its commitment to strengthening female participation in journalism and media, the OJA has aligned its initiatives with Oman’s broader national vision while also engaging with international efforts to support gender equality in the profession.

Since 2022, the Association has been a member of the Gender Equality Committee of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ). In addition, the current board of the OJA has taken a significant step toward improving female representation by including two female members, marking an important development since the organization’s establishment in 2004.

Through its responsibilities and initiatives, the Female Journalists Affairs Committee focuses on advancing the professional standing of female journalists, connecting their work with broader women’s issues, and enhancing their presence at both regional and international levels.

Women journalists are also active members in several other committees within the Association, working alongside their male colleagues in the belief that their contribution is essential across all fields of journalism and media.

On this occasion, the Omani Journalists Association expressed its appreciation to women around the world who play vital roles in different sectors, contributing to the development of their societies and strengthening the social fabric through family and community building.

The Association also paid tribute to female journalists and media professionals who continue to represent the voices of their nations through journalism, particularly while working under the challenging conditions created by conflicts, crises, and global instability.
