The Cairo International Book Fair hosted the presentation of the Arabic translation of “Cánic”, a notable work of Mexican literature, in an event highlighting cultural cooperation between Mexico and Egypt. The initiative was organized in coordination with Egypt’s National Center for Translation and reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen literary and cultural exchange between the two countries.
The event took place in the presence of Dr. Rasha Saleh, Director of the National Center for Translation. Mexico was represented by Héctor Ortega, Minister Plenipotentiary and Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Egypt, alongside academics, translators, and figures active in the cultural field.
In his remarks, Ortega underlined the role of literary translation as a key instrument for fostering mutual understanding between cultures. He noted that translating “Cánic” into Arabic allows readers in Egypt and across the Arab world to engage directly with Mexican literature. According to Ortega, the novel was selected for its universal themes, particularly those related to identity, memory, and human dignity.
Ortega also praised the National Center for Translation for its sustained support of translation initiatives, highlighting the work of translator Mohamed Gomaa Tawfik. He further acknowledged the contribution of the jury members for the third edition of the Mexican Literature into Arabic Translation Competition, Professor Khaled Abbas and Professor Khaled Salem. The session was moderated by Ali Abdel Latif.
During the event, organizers announced preparations for the fourth edition of the Mexican Literature into Arabic Translation Competition. For the upcoming edition, “A Drop of Water” by Mexican author Vicente Leñero was selected as the work to be translated.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to deepen cultural relations between Mexico and Egypt, emphasizing culture and literature as tools for dialogue, rapprochement, and long-term cooperation between societies.
