The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) officially requests the Romanian state authorities – the Presidency, Parliament, and Government of Romania – to declare 2026 as „The Year of America in Romania,” in the context of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.
The year 2026 represents a historic moment of global importance. The United States of America marks a quarter of a millennium of existence as a nation built on fundamental values such as freedom, sovereignty, faith, democracy, and freedom of expression—values that have decisively influenced the evolution of the modern world and remain essential for the future of Europe and Romania.
The role of the US and global leadership in 2026
The year 2026 is marked not only by this historic anniversary, but also by the decisive role played by the United States of America in the global architecture of security and freedom. Under the leadership of President Donald Trump, considered in 2026 to be the most important political leader globally, American influence has been felt both on the international stage and in relations with the European Union.
The political, strategic, and economic decisions of the American administration have had a direct impact on the geopolitical direction of Europe, on the security of the continent, and on the defense of democratic values in an increasingly unstable international context.
America – guarantor of freedoms in Europe
According to the United States National Security Strategy, the US explicitly assumes the role of the main defender of political freedoms, democracy, and freedom of expression in Europe, at a time when these fundamental rights are increasingly under pressure.
In this context, Romania’s relationship with the United States is not only strategic, but essential for maintaining political pluralism, freedom of opinion, and national sovereignty.
Why „Year of America in Romania”
Romania and the United States were linked by a solid strategic partnership with vital political, military, economic, and cultural dimensions. The US was the main guarantor of Romania’s security within NATO and a key ally in the Black Sea region.
America must once again become Romania’s strategic partner in security matters, and any major decision taken by Bucharest in this context – including with regard to developments in Ukraine – must first be consulted with Washington.
Declaring 2026 as the „Year of America in Romania” would allow for:
• the strengthening of the Romanian-American strategic relationship;
• the organization of cultural, educational, and academic events dedicated to American history and values;
• the promotion of economic cooperation and American investment in Romania;
• reaffirm Romania’s commitment to the free world, freedom of expression, and authentic democracy;
• strengthen ties between Romanian and American societies.
AUR’s position
AUR believes that Romania must be an active part of this historic moment and send a clear message of respect and friendship to the American nation and the American people.
At the same time, regardless of the decision of the Romanian state authorities, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians publicly announces that: AUR will declare 2026 as „The Year of the USA in Romania” and will act accordingly.
AUR will organize, support, and promote throughout 2026:
• public conferences and debates;
• cultural and commemorative events;
• educational initiatives dedicated to young people;
• public diplomacy and Romanian-American dialogue actions.
For AUR, friendship with the United States of America is strategic and based on values, not on political conformity or external ideological directives.
Conclusion
The year 2026 must be a year of freedom, sovereignty, and alliances based on real values. AUR will remain consistent with this vision and will act firmly to ensure that Romania’s relationship with the United States of America is clear, honest, and strong, in the national interest of Romania.
