The Arab League will hold an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss Israel’s decision to recognize Somaliland, following a request submitted by Somalia, the League’s General Secretariat announced on Saturday.

The meeting, to be held at the level of permanent representatives, was convened with the support of Arab member states and will examine the political and legal implications of Israel’s move. The decision has been condemned by Somalia and several regional actors, who consider it a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.

According to the Arab League, the session aims to reaffirm its rejection of unilateral actions that undermine Somalia’s territorial integrity and to reiterate its commitment to international law, as well as to relevant Arab League and African Union resolutions.

Arab diplomats are also expected to discuss ways to coordinate a unified Arab response to Israel’s decision and to express solidarity with Somalia, along with support for its internationally recognized state institutions, the statement said.

Somalia’s Ambassador to Egypt and Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ali Abdi Awari, said earlier that Mogadishu requested the emergency meeting to address what he described as the repercussions of Israel’s recognition of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland.

He warned that the move threatens Somalia’s sovereignty and risks destabilizing the Horn of Africa, adding that Arab states should take a clear stance against any steps that encourage secession or undermine the territorial integrity of states in the region.
