“We are living through an exceptional moment in the region’s history that necessitates a unified, collective voice,” said Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit.
In his address during the 165th session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level, held via video conference and chaired by Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif Al-Zayani, Aboul Gheit affirmed that the League stands united in condemning and rejecting Iranian attacks on Arab states. “We stand united in affirming and reiterating our condemnation and rejection of the Iranian attacks on Arab states—sovereign states whose sovereignty cannot be violated, whose resources cannot be targeted, and whose civilian citizens cannot be terrorised,” he said.
Aboul Gheit continued: “No Arab who cherishes their Arab identity will accept this heinous and cowardly aggression under any pretext. And how numerous are the pretexts deliberately fabricated to muddy the waters, making attacks on Arab states appear as a form of confronting Israel. Others have followed this path before, and we have seen how they ended up destroying their own countries, offering nothing tangible to the Palestinian cause or providing any real support.”
The draft agenda for the session included two items: “Targeting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Arab states subjected to Iranian attacks,” and consideration of Egypt’s request to nominate its former Foreign Minister, Nabil Fahmy (75 years old), to assume the position of Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, effective July 1, 2026. The Arab League Council recommended nominating former Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy as Secretary-General of the Arab League.
Aboul Gheit added: “If their claims were true, we would not have witnessed the overwhelming majority of drones and missiles targeting Arab countries and Arab resources, homes inhabited by peaceful people, hotels, civilian landmarks, and infrastructure facilities. These are deliberate attacks, not random acts. They can only be perpetrated by those who have lost their way and strayed from the right path, showing no regard for neighborly relations, nor respecting the rights of Islamic brotherhood. They repay kindness with hatred, enmity, and treachery, persisting in their aggression without any concern for the disastrous long-term consequences of this reckless policy on relations between peoples.”
Aboul Gheit called for an immediate halt to these Iranian attacks in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2817, and for an end to the threats that impede or obstruct navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. He said: “We stand with the right of the targeted countries to defend themselves, individually or collectively. We consider that the Iranian attacks, including their threat to freedom of navigation, constitute a threat to international peace and security, and require a more stringent stance that reflects the international consensus rejecting this blackmail practiced by Tehran.”
